On the occasion of RD Burman’s 82nd Birth Anniversary, Let’s revisit his love story with Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle.

Rahul Dev Burman, commonly known as RD Burman is considered as one of the greatest and successful music composers of the Indian Film Industry. From the 1960s to the late 1990s, RD Burman composed the music for some songs that are considered classics.

RD Burman gave the Indian musical Industry numerous memorable songs that are still hailed by people across the globe. Not many people know that he had composed his first song, ‘Aye Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa’ at the tender age of nine, which was used by his father SD Burman in the film Fantoosh.

Fondly known as Pancham Da, he gave a 360 turn to the Indian music Industry with his extraordinary talent and left behind a rich legacy for generations to come.

However, it was the cherry on the top when RD Burman and Asha Bhosle came together and gave the music industry some of the most soulful and romantic melodies. Asha Bhosle and RD Burman worked on several projects together and eventually their taste for music brought them closer.

So on the eve of RD Burman’s 82nd Birth anniversary, let’s revisit the golden time when the love blossom between him and Legendary singer Asha Bhosle.

RD Burman first saw Asha Bhosle at a music studio in the 1970s where he usually accompanied his father. He was completely mesmerized by her beauty. At the time when they met, both Asha Bhosle and RD Burman had already suffered unsuccessful love marriages.

RD Burman had a divorce with Rita Patel while Asha Bhosle had a failed toxic marriage with Ganpatrao Bhonsle with whom she had once run away at the age of 16.

RD Burman was six years younger than Asha Bhosle and fell head over heels with her. He proposed to her, but she initially rejected his proposal because of the haunting memories of her past marriage. However, after a lot of persuasions and working together for numerous romantic melodies, Asha Bhosle agreed to marry him and they tied the knot in the 1980s.

The legendary couple was ruling over the music industry at that time. There was mutual understanding and respect. Though, it was not enough. The couple separated in the late 1980s due to Burman’s alcoholism and nonstop cigarette smoking. However, they continued to admire each other and often spent quality time together.

Due to his unhealthy habits, RD Burman passed away at the age of 54 as he suffered a heart attack. But even that time Asha was there to support him. Asha was devastated as she lost the man who loved her with all his heart. The only thing that remained was their unending love for each other that lasted till the last breath of Pancham Da.

For the unversed RD Burman and Asha Bhosle collaborated for several popular songs and some of their notable works included Lakdi ki Kathi from Masoom, Duniya Mein Logon ko from Apna Desh, Chura Liya Hai Tumne, and Yamma Yamma from Shaan.
