1.Coronavirus vaccination drive to start from January 16: Govt

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chaired a meeting on Saturday to review the status of the coronavirus pandemic in the country along with the preparedness of the states and Union Territories (UTs) for the vaccination drive.

The Centre said on Saturday the Covid-19 vaccination drive would begin in the country on January 16 when nearly 30 million healthcare and frontline workers will be inoculated, followed by those above 50 years of age and the under-50 population groups with co-morbidities.

An all-woman cockpit crew will fly into Indian aviation history on Saturday when it operates the inaugural San Francisco-Bengaluru flight, going over the North Pole and taking the Atlantic route to reach the Karnataka capital at the other end of the world.

 “This will be the longest commercial flight in the world to be operated by Air India or any other airline in India…The total flight time on this route will be of more than 17 hours depending on the wind speed on that particular day,” Air India said in a statement.          

The direct distance between the two cities at opposite ends of the world is 13,993 km with a time zone change of around 13.5 hours, an Air India official said.

3. Madhav Singh Solanki, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Gujrat, passes away

He was the former External Affairs Minister of India, who also served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for four times.

The veteran leader breathed his last at his residence in Gandhinagar in the morning on Saturday.

PM Modi, condoling the death of the leader on Twitter, said that he would be remembered for the key role in Gujarat politics.

“Shri Madhav singh Solanki Ji was a formidable leader, playing a key role in Gujarat politics for decades. He will be remembered for his rich service to society. Saddened by his demise. Spoke to his son, Bharat Solanki Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti,” he tweeted.

“Beyond politics, Shri Madhav singh Solanki Ji enjoyed reading and was passionate about culture. Whenever I would meet him or speak to him, we would discuss books and he would tell me about a new book he recently read. I will always cherish the interactions we had,” his tweet further read.

4.Ravindra Jadeja ruled out of remainder of Test series against Australia

Team India’s injury crisis has further deepened with their star allrounder Ravindra Jadeja out of the remainder of the ongoing Test series against Australia. Jadeja is set to be sidelined after sustaining a left thumb dislocation and fracture. He suffered the blow on Saturday while batting against Mitchell Starc in the ongoing third Test.

Jadeja coped with the nasty blow on his left thumb when he got into an awkward position while facing a short delivery from Starc. The physio rushed to his aid and applied a bandage on the affected area. Jadeja continued batting but did not come out to the field during Australia’s second innings. Later, BCCI announced that the player had been taken for scans to determine the extent of the injury.
