A war memorial is being set up in Meerut, but it is not going to be like other war memorials! there is something really new about this war memorial that has grabbed the internet’s attention. The war memorial will be dedicated to contributions and heroics of animals that were martyred during counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir in 2016 and the battlefield during Kargil War fought in 1999 with Pakistan.
It is going to be India’s first animal war memorial that will be dedicated to war animals that contributed to military services and Meerut city in Uttar Pradesh will be host to this memorial.
As per the sources, it has been reported that the war memorial will have names of 300 dogs, 350 handlers, some horses and some mules too. Hindustan Times reported that the memorial will be similar to the National War Memorial in Delhi, although it will be a small-scaled memorial in comparison to the one in Delhi. The memorial in Meerut will be made in the military’s specialized rearing, breeding and trading centre called “Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC)”. In 1950, RVC pioneered war dog training for the first time ever in India.
The name of a Labrador named Mansi will be written at the top of the list for she played a very brave role in 2016 in counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, her handler Bashir Ahmad War will also get his name written next to her on the memorial.
The number of dogs, mules and horses present in the army is 1000, 5000 and 1500 respectively.
