Masked mobed attack at JNU: 24 injured including students and teachers
Masked goons, armed with sticks and stones, barged into Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Sunday evening and beat up students and teachers, spreading chaos and terror. Nineteen students, all from Left-backed groups, and five teachers were injured and hospitalized.
“India has an established global reputation as a liberal democracy. Now Modi-Shah’s goons are rampaging through our universities, spreading fear among our children, who should be preparing for a better future. To add insult to injury, BJP leaders are all over the media pretending that it wasn’t their goons who unleashed this violence. The people are not deceived,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted.
A JNU student broked into tears and told media person that “Masked man manhandled me, they pulled me through my hairs, kicked me, slapped me and thrashed me for raising voice against dictatorship.”

BJP’s remark on JNU chaos, “Whatever happened is not right, university students and teachers should not be manhandled under the university campus but the fact is that whole chaos was organized and preplanned by ABVP and BJP supporters under the mentorship of Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and Delhi Police,” Anurag Kashyap tweeted.
Swara Bhaskar Tweeted, “JNU students marched in large numbers and threw open the JNU gate! All of Delhi has rushed in.”
BJP MP tweeted, “Such violence in the university campus is completely against the ethos of this country. No matter what the ideology or bent of mind, students cannot be targeted this way. Strictest punishment has to be meted out to these goons who have dared to enter the University.”
The Left students and the ABVP, the student wing linked to the BJP, have accused each other of involvement in the attack. Late in the evening, the JNU authorities called in the police, who held a flag march and declared the situation normal. But students and staff insisted that the miscreants are still lurking on the campus and that they were not safe. They also accused the university authorities and the police of complicity.
Rajkumar Rao tweeted, “What happened in #JNU is shameful, horrific and heartbreaking. Those who are responsible behind these attacks should be punished.”
Sources said Home Minister Amit Shah has asked Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik for a report. Hundreds, meanwhile, gathered outside the city’s police headquarters to protest against the violence.
JNU tweeted, “While #JNU was being attacked, police got permission to evacuate protesters from #ShaheenBagh Requesting EVERYONE Nearby #Jamia please be present at Shaheen Bagh. Tonight was a planned coordinated strike to crush ALL protests against.”
Actor Richa Chaddha tweeted, “Please help the student and faculty. They were protesting a fee hike. You have worked tirelessly to better education. Please get this to stop.”
Actor and TV host Shruti Seth tweeted, “Those glorifying/justifying attacks on JNU, let’s just accept that something inside you is already dead. I’m sure you’ll live well, only you’ll never know love and compassion. Essentially stop calling yourself human.”
The security staff of JNU was also manhandled by masked men. A female and male security guard said, “they manhandled me and used abusive words, asked us to stay out of this whole scenario. We were helpless to help the students and teachers who were being brutally beaten by masked people.”
