Maldives President Muizzu to Attend Modi’s Swearing-In Amid Strained Ties
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has accepted the invitation to attend Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, June 9th. This development comes amid a backdrop of strained relations between India and the Maldives.
According to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, Muizzu is among the dignitaries invited to the event, which also includes Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Bangladesh President Sheikh Hasina, among others.
The diplomatic ties between the two nations experienced setbacks when Muizzu, perceived as pro-China, requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives soon after assuming office in November 2023.
Muizzu, who defeated the incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the presidential election, campaigned on an “India Out” platform. His attendance at the ceremony follows the precedent set by his mentor and predecessor, Abdullah Yameen, who attended Modi’s first oath-taking ceremony in May 2014.
