Mahesh Bhatt: Celebrating a Trailblazer in Indian Cinema
By Amit Kumar

Born on September 20, 1948, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, Mahesh Bhatt stands as one of the most influential filmmakers in Indian cinema. He inherited the artistic legacy from his father, Nanabhai Bhatt, a noted film director and producer, which ignited Bhatt’s passion for filmmaking.
Mahesh Bhatt made his directorial debut in 1974 with “Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain,” but it was his 1984 film “Saaransh” that established his stature as a filmmaker of substance. “Saaransh” was critically acclaimed and was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 57th Academy Awards. Bhatt’s filmography is a blend of art-house and commercial cinema, including notable films such as “Arth” (1982), “Naam” (1986), “Aashiqui” (1990), “Sadak” (1991), and “Zakhm” (1998). “Zakhm,” a semi-autobiographical film, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, highlighting Bhatt’s capacity to portray social and family issues with sensitivity.
In 1987, alongside his brother Mukesh Bhatt, he founded Vishesh Films, a production house that has delivered several commercially successful films including “Raaz” (2002), “Murder” (2004), and “Aashiqui 2” (2013). Mahesh Bhatt’s work is characterized by its bold themes and exploration of complex human emotions.
Apart from directing and producing, he has ventured into television and web series, contributing widely to Indian entertainment. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including five National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards.
Mahesh Bhatt continues to inspire generations in the Indian film industry, both through his creative works and his candidness about life and cinema.
