Laal Kaptaan audience review: Appreciates Saif Ali Khan and call it an ‘Intriguing’ film

The film, starring Saif Ali Khan, had audience who went to watch it, review it and they seem to have enjoyed Saif’s performance. Some called it an “intriguing film” while some called it gripping.

Navdeep Singh, who directed the deliciously tense Manorama: Six Feet Under and followed it up with  Anushka Sharma’s powerful drama NH 10, returns with Laal Kaptaaan, a period revenge saga that inspires more yawns than gasps. 

Laal Kaptaan is set in the late-1700s, a period of fabulous tumult in India. The Battle of Buxar has occurred, the Mughals are losing their grasp and the British are headed to assuming responsibility for the nation. North India is a wreck of contending interests: Afghans, Marathas, arranged clans and groups. Into this gurgling stew, Singh drops a naga sadhu, played by Saif Ali Khan, who has incomplete business with a warlord named Rahmat Khan (Manav Vij).

Lal Kaptaan has a bunch of talented people associated with it and their creative ambition is evident in the opening scenes itself. A piece of history from pre-independence India — the Battle of Buxor and its aftermath and the many intrigues, betrayals and deceits associated with it — become fodder for fashioning an Indian period Western about personal retribution.
