Kolkata’s Double decker bus to hit the roads after 15 years.

Kolkata: Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banarjee announced on Tuesday that Kolkata’s legendary iconic double decker bus will soon arrive back to the city after 15 years of discontinuation. However, these two buses will be only used for ‘Durga Puja Parikrama’ as of now and later be used to improve the tourism in Kolkata.

“As of now these two will be used for puja parikrama and pandal hopping. Later they will be used for tourism, such as hop-on hop-off tours. They are not meant for commercial services”. An official from Transport department told Hindustan Times.

The newly painted buses which are blue and white in colour with new features like CCTV camera, automatic doors, panic buttons and destination boards. The buses will have only 1 door and have 51 seats.

The official also told HT that double decker buses were banned in 2005 because they were too polluting and used to consume a lot of fuel.

Banarjee has ordered the Transport Department to bring back the iconic buses to the city.

The two buses are purchased by West Bengal Transport Corporation from BEBCO- a Jamshedpur based automobile company. After that these two buses will be maintained by West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.
