IMD Clarifies Delhi’s Recorded Maximum Temperature of 52.9 Degrees Due to Mungeshpur Station Sensor Error

When Delhi’s Mungeshpur weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius on May 29, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that it was due to a “malfunctioning of the sensor.”

Experts from the IMD discovered that the automatic weather station (AWS) sensor at Mungeshpur was reporting temperatures approximately 3 degrees Celsius higher than those recorded by standard instruments. The recorded maximum temperature of 52.9 degrees at Mungeshpur marked an unprecedented high for any location in India, prompting the IMD to investigate the accuracy of this reading.

A committee of IMD experts was formed to review the data, which was identified as an outlier compared to other observatories in Delhi and surpassed the previous all-time high of 48.4 degrees recorded at Palam on May 26, 1998.

On May 29, no other observatory in Delhi exceeded 50 degrees, with maximum temperatures ranging between 45.2 degrees and 49.1 degrees across different stations. The committee’s evaluation revealed that the AWS sensor at Mungeshpur recorded temperatures 3 degrees higher than standard instruments, whereas no significant discrepancies were observed in temperatures reported by other AWS stations in Delhi.

The IMD assured that necessary remedial measures are being implemented to prevent such errors in the future. Over the preceding days, Mungeshpur had recorded maximum temperatures of 48.8 degrees on May 27 and 49.9 degrees on May 28.

Automatic weather stations, like the one at Mungeshpur, record and transmit weather data without manual intervention, unlike manual observatories where observations are manually recorded every three hours. On May 29, the manual observatory at Safdarjung, which serves as a reference for the city, recorded a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius.
