IAF Shailja Dhami scripts history, becomes first female flight commander
Indian Force wing commander Shailja Dhami becomes a first female officer to be appointed as flight commander of the flying unit.
Shailja Dhami, who has been serving the air force for 15 years, has been flying choppers. She became the first woman flying instructor of the air force and is also the first woman officer to get a permanent commission of the flying branch.
Dhami took over as Flight Commander of a Chetak helicopter unit at Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Chetak is a single-engine turboshaft, light utility helicopter with a capacity of 6 passengers and a maximum speed of 220 km/hour.
