The Indian government has taken a major step by banning all real-money online gaming apps. This includes popular fantasy sports apps like Dream11, MPL, RummyCircle, and online poker. The decision comes under the Online Gaming (Promotion and Regulation) Bill, 2025, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on 20 August 2025.
According to the new law, all real-money gaming apps are now illegal. Players cannot place bets or play for cash prizes anymore. The ban also applies to the promotion and advertisement of such apps. Even celebrities who endorse these platforms could face penalties.

Why the Government Took This Step
The government said the ban is necessary to protect people from addiction, financial losses, and fraud. Officials mentioned that many families lost their savings due to these apps. The law also aims to prevent misuse of gaming platforms for money laundering and illegal activities.
Impact on the Industry
India’s real-money gaming industry is valued at around $23 billion (₹2 lakh crore). The ban could cause huge losses for companies like Dream11 and MPL. It may also affect over 4 lakh jobs in the sector. Investors are concerned about the economic impact, but the government says people’s safety is more important
Positive Steps
The bill also promotes e-sports and educational gaming. The government plans to create a National E-sports Authority to ensure safe gaming, support players, and help the sector grow responsibly.
The bill will now go to the Rajya Sabha and then to the President for approval. Once it becomes law, anyone violating it could face up to 3 years in prison and fines up to ₹1 crore.
This decision has surprised many gaming enthusiasts, but it is a big step toward safe and responsible gaming in India. Fans of fantasy sports and online games will have to find alternatives, but the government believes this move will protect players from addiction and financial risk.
