July 6, 2022 (New Delhi): Modern Love Mumbai is based on the New York Times’ famous column Modern Love’. Hansal Mehta has directed the ‘Baai’ episode of Modern Love Mumbai which is comprised of five other episodes. Mehta breaks his silence over the fact that he did not cast gay actors to represent the gay couple’s love and marriage. The ‘Baai’ episode, directed by Hansal, was loved by a lot of people and gained massive support from the LGBTQI community. On the contrary, it was criticized by some members of the queer community because of its casting. Now, Hansal has responded to people’s reaction to the casting of Baai.

Interacting with Mashable India, Hansal Mehta broke his silence on why he did not cast gay actors in Modern Love Mumbai’s Baai. “I understand what they (the queer community) are saying and I believe that representation should come from the stories. If somebody is right for the cast, whether queer or straight, they should be cast correctly. I will have queer representation if the actors are correct for the part. These are the aesthetic choices you make. But I don’t see a reason for a backlash. There’s an honest representation. I have seen it happening in front of me,” said Hansal Mehta. This reply from the director somehow did justice to people from the gay and queer community who were reportedly asking the reason for not casting Gay Actors for the actual representation of Gay Love Marriage.
