Delhi Metro Fare Hike: Ticket Prices Increased After 8 Years

By Amit Kumar

Commuting on the Delhi Metro will become slightly more expensive starting August 25, 2025, as the
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) approved a fare hike today—the first increase in ticket prices
since 2017. The new fares come amid rising operational costs and aim to balance maintaining
affordable public transport for millions of daily riders with the network’s sustainability.
The DMRC announced via social media that fares will increase by a nominal amount ranging from Rs
1 to Rs 4 across all metro lines, while the Airport Express Line will see an increase of up to Rs 5. This
moderate hike is designed to keep the metro service both financially viable and accessible.
Under the revised fare structure effective immediately, the minimum fare for trips of 0-2 km has
risen from Rs 10 to Rs 11. For distances between 2-5 km, the fare is now Rs 21 during weekdays
compared to Rs 11 on Sundays and national holidays. The highest fare for journeys beyond 32 km has
increased from Rs 60 to Rs 64 on regular days and Rs 54 on Sundays.
The DMRC has also introduced differentiated fares on Sundays and national holidays to encourage
off-peak travel and provide some relief to commuters on those days. For example, travel up to 2 km
costs Rs 11 regardless of the day, but for distances beyond 12 km, fares on Sundays are lower than
the weekday rates.
With over 3 million passengers using the Delhi Metro daily, the service remains a vital artery in the
capital’s transport infrastructure, easing road congestion and reducing pollution. However, the fare
revision has drawn mixed responses from commuters on social media, many questioning the need
for an increase and demanding improved facilities in return.
To encourage frequent travel and ease the impact of the hike, the DMRC continues to promote its
smart card system, which offers up to 20% discounts on fares during off-peak hours.
