Celebrating the Birth Anniversary of Mother Teresa: A Legacy of Compassion

By Amit Kumar

Every year, the world pauses to remember and honor one of the most inspiring figures of the 20th
century—Mother Teresa. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, now part of
North Macedonia, she would go on to become a symbol of selfless love and unwavering dedication
to the poorest and sickest among us. Her birth anniversary is not just a date on the calendar; it is a
reminder of what true humanity and compassion look like.
Mother Teresa’s journey began in humble surroundings, but her calling was clear from an early age.
At 18, she left home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland, preparing herself to serve. Soon after, she
moved to India, where she became deeply moved by the plight of the destitute in Calcutta’s slums.
This empathy ignited a lifelong mission—she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 to care for
“the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel
unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society.”
Her work was not just about providing aid; it was about restoring dignity to those society had
forgotten. Whether it was comforting the dying or feeding the hungry, Mother Teresa approached
every task with profound warmth and respect. Through decades of tireless effort, she became a
beacon of hope, earning accolades including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
On Mother Teresa’s birth anniversary, people around the globe reflect on her message of love in
action. In a world often dominated by conflict and indifference, her life reminds us that one person’s
kindness can truly change the world. Today, her legacy lives on in countless charitable organizations
and in millions of hearts inspired by her example.
