On Saturday, Shubman Gill was announced as the new captain of India’s ODI team for the upcoming tour of Australia. He takes over from senior player Rohit Sharma, marking an important change for the team.Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been included in the 15-member squad announced by the BCCI. Shubman Gill will lead the team as captain, with Shreyas Iyer as vice-captain for the three ODIs. In the T20 series, Suryakumar Yadav will remain captain, and Gill will be his deputy.
India’s top fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been given rest for the ODI series to manage his workload. Young left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has been brought back into the ODI squad. The three ODIs will be played in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney between October 19 and 25. After that, a five-match T20I series will be played from October 29 to November 8.
The last tournament Rohit and Kohli played was the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai. In the group stage, Kohli scored a century while chasing against Pakistan. In the final against New Zealand, Rohit played a brilliant half-century to help India win the chase.Since the IPL ended earlier this year, both Rohit and Kohli haven’t played any competitive cricket. In August, some reports claimed that the BCCI was planning a farewell match for them in Sydney on October 25, but a BCCI official said no such talks have happened so far.
