By Amit Kumar

As the nation remembers Sridevi on her birth anniversary, we reflect on the extraordinary journey of an actor who left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Born on August 13, 1963, Sridevi began her acting career at the tender age of four, and went on to become one of the most admired and versatile performers in the country.

Sridevi’s career spanned five decades and multiple film industries, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. She made her Hindi film debut as a child artist in Rani Mera Naam (1972), and her first leading role in Bollywood came with Solva Sawan (1979). However, it was with Himmatwala (1983) that she rose to national prominence, captivating audiences with her expressive eyes, comic timing, and unmatched dance skills.

Her filmography is a testament to her range, whether it was the emotional depth she brought to Sadma, the double role in ChaalBaaz, or the iconic performances in Mr. India, Nagina, and Lamhe, Sridevi redefined the possibilities for female actors in commercial cinema. After a hiatus, she made a celebrated comeback with English Vinglish (2012), followed by Mom (2017), which became her final release during her lifetime.

In 2013, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, acknowledging her contribution to Indian cinema.

Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018, in Dubai, leaving fans and the film fraternity in deep mourning. She was posthumously awarded the National Film Award for Best Actress for Mom, solidifying her legacy as a performer of rare talent and commitment.

On what would have been her 62nd birthday, Sridevi is remembered not just for her cinematic achievements, but also for the grace, charm, and dedication she brought to her craft. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and remains etched in the hearts of millions.
