Karnataka Power Shift Official: Governor Accepts Siddaramaiah’s Resignation; DK Shivakumar Set to Take Charge

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has officially accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. This marks the formal conclusion of a high-stakes political transition. In a Friday morning notification from the Lok Bhavan, the Governor also dissolved the state’s Council of Ministers with immediate effect. Siddaramaiah will continue to serve as the caretaker Chief Minister. He will hold this role until his successor, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, formally takes the oath of office.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Governor’s special secretary. A personal emergency in Madhya Pradesh briefly delayed the Governor, which caused a pause in the formal procedure. Governor Gehlot returned to Bengaluru and accepted the transition under Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India.
A Voluntarily Executed Power-Sharing Pact
Siddaramaiah’s exit closes a historic chapter for Karnataka. In January 2026, he became the state’s longest-serving Chief Minister. Addressing the media, the 77-year-old veteran reiterated that his resignation was entirely “voluntary.” He noted that it followed explicit directives from the Congress high command in New Delhi.
The transition honours an internal rotational power-sharing formula devised after the Congress party’s 2023 electoral victory. The public transition remained cooperative, even though the announcement triggered emotional protests from Siddaramaiah’s supporters across several districts. Specifically, during a farewell breakfast meeting at the ‘Cauvery’ residence, onlookers saw DK Shivakumar touching the outgoing Chief Minister’s feet. Consequently, this gesture successfully projected a strong image of party unity.

The Road Ahead for DK Shivakumar
Both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar have travelled separately to New Delhi to consult with the party’s top brass. They are finalising the logistics of the upcoming administration and discussing a major Cabinet reshuffle.
- The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Meeting: The state Congress MLAs are scheduled to meet formally to select DK Shivakumar as their new legislative leader.
- Balancing the Cabinet: To manage regional and caste equations, the party is reportedly considering the appointment of up to four Deputy Chief Ministers under Shivakumar. High-profile names under discussion include state ministers Priyank Kharge and Yathindra Siddaramaiah.
- National Role for Siddaramaiah: The veteran mass leader is expected to transition into a national role within the All India Congress Committee (AICC), with a potential Rajya Sabha seat on the horizon ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Conclusion
The official acceptance of Siddaramaiah’s resignation brings an end to months of intense political speculation regarding Karnataka’s leadership. By executing this transition smoothly, the Congress leadership has successfully managed a delicate internal power balance while preventing major factional fallout. However, the true test for incoming Chief Minister DK Shivakumar begins now. As he steps into the state’s highest office, he faces the immediate tasks of structuring a balanced new Cabinet and sustaining the party’s momentum ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
