The Legislative Assembly of West Bengal has been formally dissolved by Governor R.N. Ravi, with effect from Thursday, May 7, 2026. The action coincides with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s historic refusal to step down after her party lost the 2026 Assembly elections. The first BJP government to be installed in the state’s history is made possible by this dissolution.

The Governor’s Notification

In an official gazette notification, the Governor invoked Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution to dissolve the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. This action coincided with the completion of the outgoing House’s five-year term. Specifically, the order ended the tenure of the existing legislature, rendering Banerjee’s refusal to quit infructuous. Consequently, she and her entire cabinet no longer hold their official positions except in a limited caretaker capacity.

Mamata Banerjee Remains Defiant

The political storm ignited after Banerjee declared a “moral victory” and alleged widespread voter rigging and conspiracy.

  • Refusal to Resign: Breaking long-standing tradition, the TMC chief stated she would not visit the Raj Bhavan to tender her resignation.
  • Allegations of Fraud: Banerjee claimed that the election results—where the BJP won over 200 seats—did not reflect the genuine will of the people.
  • Furthermore, the TMC plans to challenge the election results in court. However, this legal move does not stall the formation of a new government.

BJP Prepares for Power

With 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, the BJP won a resounding majority and denounced the departing Chief Minister’s position as a “mockery of democracy.”
New Leadership: On Friday, May 8, at 4:00 PM, newly elected BJP lawmakers will convene to formally select their leadership.
Swearing-in event: On Saturday, May 9, 2026, the party will have a sizable swearing-in event at the Brigade Parade Grounds.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, will serve as the meeting’s chief observer.

Conclusion

Fifteen years of Trinamool Congress dominance came to an official end with the Assembly’s dissolution. Moreover, the Governor’s intervention has essentially neutralised the constitutional conflict. This remains true notwithstanding the TMC’s legal attempts to challenge the mandate. Meanwhile, with all eyes on the Brigade Parade Grounds, West Bengal prepares for Saturday’s historic transfer. Consequently, the state is finally moving toward its first-ever BJP-led government.
