Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Ganga Expressway today, Wednesday, April 29, 2026. This 594-km-long high-speed corridor connects Meerut in the west to Prayagraj in the east. It is now the longest expressway in Uttar Pradesh and a cornerstone of the state’s industrial push.

Transforming Connectivity and Travel

Travel times are significantly reduced by the greenfield project, which is expected to cost ₹36,230 crore. The commute from Meerut to Prayagraj used to take ten to twelve hours. As a result, the trip takes only six hours because of this six-lane access-controlled motorway. Additionally, the expressway’s 120 kmph design speed guarantees quicker and safer travel across 12 important regions.

Key Strategic and Industrial Features

The Ganga Expressway is more than just a road; it is an economic lifeline. The corridor passes through Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj.

  1. Industrial Clusters: Authorities have planned 12 industrial clusters along the route to attract investments in logistics and manufacturing.
  2. Strategic Defence: A 3.5-km-long emergency airstrip in Shahjahanpur allows for IAF fighter jet landings.
  3. Modern Technology: UPEIDA used Swiss AI-based sensors to monitor road quality throughout the construction process.

Building a Growth Engine

The expressway is a “lifeline” for farmers and business owners, according to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Uttar Pradesh presently makes up about 60% of India’s network of access-controlled motorways as a result of this opening. Additionally, by facilitating easy access to sacred locations like Varanasi and Haridwar, the project promotes religious tourism and fortifies regional economic ties.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Ganga Expressway marks a historic milestone in India’s infrastructure development. By linking western and eastern Uttar Pradesh through a single high-speed corridor, the project bridges developmental gaps and paves the way for a $1 trillion state economy. Ultimately, this mega-project signals a new era of mobility and industrial prosperity for millions across northern India.
