Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India’s first bullet train will begin its inaugural 100-km run between Surat and Vapi in August 2027
The section is part of the larger 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor, also known as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. This project is expected to be fully operational by 2029.
At Rail Bhavan, after unveiling the rationalization of bulk cement rates and the policy for bulk cement terminals on Tuesday, Vaishnaw announced that the travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad would reduce to 1 hour and 58 minutes once the corridor is ready.
He mentioned that the first operational run in August 2027 would be restricted to the 100-kilometer stretch between Surat and Vapi.
“A significant milestone is that the high-speed rail corridor will enable the bullet train to cover the distance between Ahmedabad and Mumbai in just 1 hour and 58 minutes upon its completion. The inaugural run, scheduled for August 2027, will cover a distance of 100 kilometers between Surat and Vapi, as stated by Vaishaw.
The minister announced that trains on the 508-kilometer corridor will be able to reach speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour.
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad trip, with four stops, will take 1 hour and 58 minutes. However, if the train halts at all 12 stations, the journey will extend to 2 hours and 17 minutes.
