Deadly Explosion Hits Nowgam Police Station—Security Forces on High Alert
Powerful explosion shakes Nowgam area as police launch massive cordon-and-search operation. Investigation underway to determine the source and intent.

Blast During Explosive Examination
A strong explosion took place inside the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar on Friday night. The blast killed nine people and injured over 32 others. Police teams were examining a large stock of seized explosives when the incident happened. The cache weighed nearly 360 kg and came from an ongoing cross-state investigation.
Officials Confirm Accidental Detonation
J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat confirmed that the blast was accidental. He also explained that forensic teams were extracting samples from the material at the time. The explosives were highly unstable and reacted without warning. As a result, the examination room took the full impact.
Damage Captured on CCTV
The explosion caused major damage to the building. It also triggered smaller secondary blasts and started a fire inside the compound. CCTV footage released by several media outlets shows the moment of the blast. The video displays a sudden flash, heavy smoke, and chaos inside the station.
Multiple Forensic Staff Among the Victims
Most of the people who lost their lives were members of the forensic and crime-scene units. Several police officers were also injured. Rescue teams and firefighters arrived quickly and brought the situation under control. They also shifted the injured personnel to nearby hospitals.
No Terror Link Found So Far
Although the explosive stock was connected to a terror-module probe, officials have not found any sign of a deliberate attack. A militant proxy group issued an early online claim, but authorities rejected it. Both the police and the Home Ministry stated that there is no evidence of a terror strike.
Area Secured for Investigation
Police sealed the area around the station after the incident. Forensic experts are still checking the site and collecting samples for further study. Meanwhile, several residents reported hearing the blast from far away. Many also saw a large fire rising over the building right after the explosion.
