World Space Week 2025: Celebrating Humanity’s Journey to Living in Space

Every year from October 4 to 10, nations across the globe unite to celebrate World Space Week, the largest public space event on Earth. Established by the United Nations in 1999, World Space Week honors two pivotal moments in space history: the launch of Sputnik 1, humanity’s first artificial satellite, on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967. These milestones mark the beginning of human space exploration and the cooperative governance of outer space for peaceful purposes.
In 2025, the event focuses on the theme “Living in Space,” spotlighting humanity’s advances toward establishing sustainable habitats beyond Earth. This theme underscores the technological innovations, challenges, and international collaborations necessary to realize life in extraterrestrial environments. Activities planned worldwide include interactive exhibitions, scientific talks, educational programs, and hands-on workshops aimed at inspiring students and general audiences alike.
Thousands of events across over 90 countries will participate, ranging from museum exhibits and astronomy observations to webinars and industry roundtables. Notable celebrations include displays at the Kennedy Space Center, featuring cutting-edge lunar exploration technology such as the Eagle Lunar Terrain Vehicle. These events aim to connect the public with current space science and foster interest in STEM fields among youth.
World Space Week serves as a global platform to educate, inspire, and unite people through the shared achievements of space science and technology.
