DR. MANMOHAN SINGH : THE 13TH PRIME MINISTER

By Anshika Khera

Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s 13th Prime Minister, is widely respected as a statesman, economist, and reformer. Born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, now in Pakistan, he pursued higher education at Cambridge and Oxford, specializing in economics. Known for his simplicity, integrity, and scholarly nature, Singh played a crucial role in shaping India’s economic direction.

As Finance Minister in 1991, he introduced landmark liberalization reforms under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. These reforms opened India’s economy, encouraged foreign investment, and laid the foundation for rapid growth. His vision transformed India from a closed economy to an emerging global player.

In 2004, Singh became Prime Minister and served two consecutive terms until 2014. During his tenure, India witnessed high GDP growth, expansion in infrastructure, and social welfare schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Education Act. He was also instrumental in the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, which marked a turning point in India’s global standing.

Despite criticism for being a “silent” leader, Dr. Singh is admired for his humility, intellect, and dedication. His legacy lies in steering India toward modern economic progress while upholding democratic and ethical values.
