National Sports Day-Playing for the nation
By Anshika Khera

National Sports Day is celebrated every year on 29th August in India to honor the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. Known as the “Wizard of Hockey,” Dhyan Chand brought immense pride to the nation with his exceptional skills, winning gold medals in the Olympics of 1928, 1932, and 1936.
The day is observed across schools, colleges, and institutions to spread awareness about the importance of sports and physical activities in daily life. Various events such as runs, matches, fitness drives, and awareness campaigns are organized to encourage people, especially the youth, to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
On this occasion, the President of India also confers prestigious sports awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, and Dronacharya Award to outstanding athletes and coaches. These recognitions not only celebrate achievements but also inspire future generations to pursue excellence in sports.
National Sports Day serves as a reminder that sports are not just about competition but also about teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. It highlights the role of physical fitness in building a strong and energetic nation.
