World’s first ever ‘Human-Head’ transplant is happening soon!

Frankenstein will be here soon!

Valery Spiridonov, a Russian man with a fatal degenerative disorder, has volunteered to become the first human to receive a head transplant. Spiridonov suffers from Werdnig-Hoffman disease, a rare and often fatal genetic disorder that kills nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord which allow the body to move. He has been confined to a wheelchair for most of his adult life, and his movement is limited to feeding himself, typing and operating the wheelchair with a joystick.

“Removing all the sick parts but the head would do a great job in my case,” Spiridonov told The Atlantic. “I couldn’t see any other way to treat myself.” The procedure, which has never been attempted before, would involve removing the head of a young man who is brain-dead but still alive otherwise. Spiridonov’s head would also be removed simultaneously and carefully attached to the donor body.

He would be kept in a medically-induced coma for at least 3 to 4 weeks while his new body heals.

Italian neuroscientist Dr. Sergio Canavero hopes to perform the procedure in early 2017, along with Chinese surgeon Dr. Xiaoping Ren. The surgery is expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, requiring at least 80 surgeons to perform. Canavero says he believes it has a 90% chance of success.

Others in the scientific community disagree with the idea of the proposed head transplant, because it raises previously uncharted ethical concerns, pertaining to loss of identity and other major parts of the conscious mind.

Let’s hope everything will turn out to be exactly what Dr. Sergio Canavero predicts. It will be a new milestone in medical science field.
