“Watch: Clever Cat Alerts Marathi Director’s Family as Thief Breaks into Mumbai Apartment”

In a startling turn of events, Marathi filmmaker Swapna Waghmare Joshi’s Mumbai apartment became the scene of a dramatic break-in, but not without an unexpected hero: the family’s quick-thinking pet cat. The incident, which unfolded on the 6th floor of Joshi’s Andheri flat, was captured in a CCTV video shared by filmmaker Ashoke Pandit on Instagram.

The footage reveals a thief scaling a drainage pipe in the dead of night, slipping through an open window into Joshi’s 3BHK apartment. Dressed in a T-shirt and shorts, the intruder methodically searched through the house, initially evading the family’s dog and focusing on finding valuables. The thief’s search led him to the room where Joshi’s elderly mother and her caretaker were asleep. He then moved on to another bedroom, where Joshi’s daughter and son-in-law were resting, and managed to steal a wallet containing ₹6,000.

However, the thief’s plans were thwarted by the family’s second cat, who sprang into action and alerted the family to the presence of the intruder. As the cat caused a commotion, Joshi’s son-in-law, Deven, noticed the thief and gave chase. Despite Deven’s efforts, the thief managed to flee, leaving behind the stolen wallet and avoiding further theft.

Ashoke Pandit, who posted the video to Instagram, used the incident as a cautionary tale, particularly highlighting the importance of vigilance. “Presenting the real crime patrol,” Pandit wrote. “This video is for all of us, especially senior citizens who live alone. You will be shocked to see how a thief climbs the 6th floor of the residence of noted filmmaker Swapna Waghmare Joshi using pipes and jumps out the same way when noticed. These days, security guards are either busy with their mobiles or asleep. Share this video as much as you can.”

Following the incident, Joshi reported the break-in to the police, leading to an FIR being filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the unidentified thief. The investigation is ongoing.

The incident sparked a flurry of reactions online. One user commented, “Very shocking… thanks for sharing, Ashok ji. We all need to be cautious.” Another added, “Very bad and shocking… Watchman sleeps at night… It’s important to cover windows with grills. Thank God nothing happened…” A third user expressed concern, stating, “How scary is this… hope your mom and all of you are fine, Swapnaji.” A fourth simply remarked, “What the hell… this is so scary.”
