The story behind the first day of Navratri, which color should you prefer on this day?

Navratri festival- the most auspicious time is here! Today being the very first day of the occasion devotees worship Goddess Shailputri – the form of Mother Nature. Shailaputri’ means the daughter of mountains also known as Parvati. She is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga who is referred to as Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. She is the first among Navadurga and devotees worship her on the first day of Navaratri.

According to Hindu mythology, Shailaputri is believed to be the rebirth of Sati. As the story goes, Daksha held a grand yagna w/o inviting Shiva and Sati to slight Shiva. Sati tries to get Shiva to come with her, but he declines. So Sati goes to the yagna herself and demands to know from her father why Shiva wasn’t invited. Daksha responds that the yagna was only for the devas, and he has no relationship remaining with Shiva. Sati gets furious at this and enters the yagna fire itself, thereby disrupting the yagna.

She was the daughter of Daksha Shailputri and was born to the King of Mountains. Shail means mountain and Putri means daughter. Goddess Shailaputri symbolizes the power of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. She is quite recognizable as she rides a bull and carries a trident along with a lotus in her hands.
