G-7 Summit 2022, Germany

This summit is vital for India as it faces criticism for buying the discounted oil from Russia. It is the time when Indian diplomacy can come into play and build a strong case for India. And team India seems to be doing just that, during a session on ‘Investing in a better future: Climate, Energy, Health’, PM Modi spoke in the right to accessibility of energy, he said, “All of you will also agree with this that energy access should not be the privilege of the rich only – a poor family also has same rights on energy. And today when energy costs are sky-high due to geopolitical tensions, it is more important to remember this thing.”

PM Modi also said, “Ancient India has seen a time of immense prosperity; then we have also tolerated centuries of slavery, and now independent India is the fastest growing big economy in the world. But during this whole period, India did not let its commitment to the environment get diluted even a single bit. 17% of the world’s population resides in India. But our contribution to global carbon emissions is only 5%.”

Amidst the ongoing tensions in Ukraine, the energy crisis has caused inflation to rise all over the globe, each country is taking measures to mitigate this issue and India is no exception. It has continuously defended its decision for the purchase of crude oil from Russia even when major economies of the world have placed several sanctions on Russia. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has said in a press statement that India’s energy needs are enormous with an average daily consumption of around 5 million barrels. Energy justice is crucial for India and to fulfill it, Indian Energy companies buy from all major oil producers in the World.

In such challenging times, it is important for the Government to ensure access to affordable energy for all citizens. “Despite attempts to portray it otherwise, energy purchases from Russia remain minuscule in comparison to India’s total consumption,” the ministry had said. The Indian diplomacy is at work to balance its relation with the Western and Russian block. And they are doing a decent job at it and we would like to say Chak De India!.
