Late-night Lathi charge over the arrest of a Congress Leader in Lucknow here’s more on this

Last night, there were protests at a police station in Lucknow after Uttar Pradesh police arrested UP Congress minority cell chairperson Shahnawaz Alam for his role in the violence that took place during CAA protest in the state capital in December 2019. In Lucknow, the protest turned into violence when a person died and many were injured on December 19.

Mr. Alam along with 2 more members of Congress members who were in an apartment of central Lucknow was picked up a little after 8 pm in the evening. A CCTV footage from the roadside captured that he was made sit in the jeep by police personnel in plain clothes.

In January this year, he was appointed as the chairperson in the Congress minority cell. It was also reported that he was close to congress UP general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and belongs to east UP’S Ballia.

Late last night, lathis were used by the police in order to stop Congress workers from raising slogans inside the police station compound where Mr. Alam was brought to move out.

In the videos shot by mobile phones showed that Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu was arguing with senior officials by stating their this move as ‘dictatorship’.

It was heard that Mr. Lallu was telling the senior officials that, “just because you have a pen, you can’t write cases against anyone at your will.” To which officials said to approach the court. Later, the cops used lathis on the Congress workers who were raising slogans on the arrest of Mr. Alam.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted in Hindi that, “Congress leaders and workers are committed to raising their voice on the matter of people’s welfare. The BJP government is using UP police as their tool of choice and trying to suppress the voice of other party but they will not be able to stop Congress party.”

The police maintained that he was arrested after a proper investigation. Dinesh Singh, a senior Lucknow police official said that “his name has come to light earlier in our investigation into the violence that happened in the city’s Parivartan Chowk area during anti CAA protest on December 19 last year. We have made an arrest only after getting evidence against him.”
