Yogi Adityanath: From A Mahant to Chief Minister

Yogi Adityanath a.k.a Ajay Singh Bisht was born in the family of  Nandan Singh Bisht on 5th June 1972 at Panchur area of Pauri Garhwal district of Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand). He belongs to a Garhwali Rajput family.

When he announced his decision of becoming a “Sanyaasi”, his mother describes how she felt to see the only child going and living the “Sanyaasi” life. She couldn’t able to sleep for 5 nights because of her son decision.

Before becoming a “Sanyaasi”, Yogi Adityanath got his Bachelors in Mathematics from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University, Srinagar(Uttarakhand). He was active in politics since he was a student. While studying Bachelors in science from Garhwal University, he was a sharp worker to ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad).

Ajay Singh Bisht got the title of YOGI in September 2014, when he was set in-charge for Gorakshapeethadhishwar( Gorakhnath Mutt) following the salvation of his spiritual father Guru Mahant Avaidyanath.

Yogi left his family at an age of 22, and in 1993 he put Gorakhpur as his centre. As the affection towards Gorakhnath Mutt grew with Yogi, it led Yogi to be the successor for Gorakhnath Mutt on 15th February 1994.

During the Lok Sabha elections of 1998,  Gorakh Mutt put Yogi ahead as a contender. This turned out very fruitful as Yogi fought the elections and won. Hence, Yogi got the title of youngest M.P. ever.

After that, Yogi Adityanath won 5 times consecutively from the same seat of Gorakhpur (1999, 2004,2009,2014 and 2017).

Yogi Adityanath had also founded the Hindu Yuva Vahini. An organisation known for their aggressive Hindu gestures.

 He is a firebrand politician and a star campaigner for Bhartiya Janata Party. Being a firebrand of BJP and having a hardliner “Hindutva” image associated with him, he also has many controversies surrounding him.

There is a huge list of controversies associated with Yogi Adityanath, starting from the conversion of Christians to Hinduism to his blunt speeches against Islam. He is always in the news for his aggressive and offensive speeches against minorities.

With Yogi’s Hardline image of “Hindutva” and Modi’s slogan of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas” it remains to be seen how will this two go hand-in-hand with two totally different ideologies.
