Justice BV Nagarathna of Karnataka High Court might become the first female Chief Justice of India: Know How

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court Collegium proposed nine names as the probable candidates for Chief Justice of India. Justice BV Nagarathna of Karnataka High Court and two other female Justice names has been included in the list. The other two female names included in the list are Justice Hima Kohli of Telangana High Court, and Bela Trivedi of Gujarat High Court.

Among the other six recommended candidates for elevation of post are Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Abhay Oka, Gujarat High Court Justice Vikram Nath, Sikkim High Court Chief Justice JK Maheshwari, Kerala High Court Justice CT Ravikumar, Justice MM Sundresh of Madras High Court, and Former Additional Solicitor General PS Narasimha.

In the course of past 22 months this is for the first time that Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India PV Ramana has proposed the probable names to government of India for the post of CJI.

If Nagarathna becomes the CJI then she will become the first female to head the judicial matters of top priorities in India. Before this no female has marked that place. Retd CJI SA Bobde had said earlier that its the high time that female should be appointed as Chief Justice of India but the problem that collegium faced is that females when offered had refused to head this position. Reasons can be anything, as out of total judges in India, female participation is 11% only.

Out of 25 High courts in India only 1 High Court has female as Chief Justice and that is Telangana headed by Hima Kohli. Infact, in the High Courts of Patna, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Uttrakhand there is no women judge.
