Diwali has moved from being the festival of lights to the festival of noise, pollution, accidents and extravagance.
About 16 per cent of Delhi’s children have an asthma risk. As it gets triggered due to excessive smoke and pollution, always keep medications and inhalers on hand. Fireworks can damage eyes and hearing.
Always keep a safe distance from them. The government should regulate fireworks and introduce certifications.
Highly polluting and loud crackers should not enter the market. Every residential complex or commercial complex must do an audit of its fire safety before Diwali and equip themselves for it.
The first thing we need to do to make Diwali sustainable is to move away from fireworks. They cause air pollution, noise pollution, generate a lot of waste and harm the health of humans and animals. Avoid using disposable cutlery and plates during gatherings. Use steel instead.
