First CM of Chattisgarh, Ajit Jogi, passes away at 74


Ajit Jogi, the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh after the state was formed in 2000, breathed his last on Friday. His demise news was informed by his son Amit Jogi via twitter ,”The 20-year-old youth of the state of Chhattisgarh rose from his father’s shadow today. Not only me but Chhattisgarh has lost his father, not a leader. Honorable Ajit Jogi left his family of 2.5 crore people and went to God The village-poor resort of Chhattisgarh went far away from us.”

“In this moment of anguish, I am literally without words. @ajitjogi_cg Peace to his soul and give strength to all of us. His funeral will take place tomorrow in his native land Gorela,” Amit wrote in another tweet.

He suffered two cardiac attacks in last two weeks and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Raipur from May 9.

According to a statement by the hospital, the death took place at 3:30 pm. His condition deteriorated around 1:30 this afternoon as he again suffered a cardiac arrest, said the hospital. After a two-hour effort, the doctors could not revive the patient.

Ajit Jogi has served as the first Chief Minister of the state of Chhattisgarh from November 2000 to November 2003. He parted ways with the Congress in 2016 and went on to form the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J).

Before setting his feet in politics, Ajit Jogi was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He served as a district collector of Indore in Madhya Pradesh between 1981 and 1985. Before he took office as the first CM of Chhattisgarh in November, 2000, Ajit Jogi served as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Madhya Pradesh.

Many took to twitter to offer condolences but most of them included ‘but’ in their obituary. While offering condolences, most of them also remembered or mentioned former CM’s wrongdoings while his action in politics.

Ajit Jogi is survived by his wife Dr Renuka Jogi and son Amit Jogi who is married to Richa Jogi. Ajit Jogi’s daughter Anusha passed away in 2000.
