March 5, 2022: Russia invaded Ukraine by dominating black sea city of Kherson in Southern Ukraine on Thursday, February 24. Russian forces also surround “Mariupol” after a terrifying fight with Ukrainian soldiers . After kherson, Ukraine’s second city “Kharkiv” came under severe Russian shelling, with police and university buildings among under serious threat. After Russia invaded multi-region areas of Ukraine, the whole country has thrust into a conflict that the whole nation is in the ‘throes of war’, with a humanitarian disaster unfolding.
After Russia’s serious warning, millions of people in Ukraine have fled from the country according to a report by the United Nations. Also Indian students were evacuated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) amid the war and invasion. But everyone is curious to know the reason that, “Why Russia Wants Ukraine”. The reason is clear that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was formed in 1949. NATO pushed eastward, bringing most of the Eastern European nations that had been in the Communist orbit earlier. Also various countries including Russia, Armenia, Belarus and Ukraine got alienated after breakdown of Soviet Union. In 2004, NATO also added the former Soviet Baltic republics Estonia, Latvia and Lithunia.
After four years of formation, NATO cleared it’s intention by offering membership to Ukraine some day in the distant future after crossing a red line for Russia. NATO was formed with the sole purpose to stop Russian Aggression and it’s expansion. Putin has always seen NATO’s expansion as an existential threat, and as a prospect of Ukraine joining the Western military alliance which is a “hostile act” according to Russia. With this view Putin invoked in a televised speech on Thursday, saying that Ukraine’s aspiration to join the “military alliance” was a dire threat to Russia. Currently there are approximately 30 countries which are a part of NATO. If any war or invasion is done in any country which is a part of NATO then every nation of this organisation takes strict action against the invader country which Russia never wants.
Generally, Eastern population of Ukraine supports Russia. People of Donetsk and Luhansk still believes that they are integral part of Russia linguistically, politically and ideologically. Putin has earlier emphasized his view that Ukraine is integral part of Russia, culturally, linguistically and politically which most people of eastern Ukraine feels. Contrary to this, western population of Ukraine wants to be dominated by European powers. Ukraine is a good source of natural resources and oil gases and Russia doesn’t want to give up on Ukraine. For Your Information (FYI), Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014.
