Shocking! Bangladesh Cricketer Sabbir Rahman allegedly threw stones and racially abused spinner Elias Sunny during a match of Dhaka Premier League.

The controversies in the Dhaka Premier League 2021 seem not coming to halt any time soon as Sabbir Rahman is now under scanner for racially abusing and throwing stones at his opponent during a league match in the Dhaka Premier League.

Bangladesh Cricketer Sabbir Rahman allegedly directed racist slurs and threw a stone towards Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi player Elias Sunny during the Dhaka Premier League match between OLD DOHS and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi.

Sabbir, who is a player of Legends of Rupganj, had arrived with the rest of his team for their match on Wednesday morning. The 29-year-old, who was scheduled to take the field as part of the Legends of Rupganj later in the day allegedly threw a stone and abused Sunny by saying ‘Kalo’ while he was fielding at deep square leg.Play was held up for a while as Sunny then approached the umpires and informed them of the incident.

Rahman’s actions have come at a time when the entire cricket community is making efforts to make the game more sensitive towards the evils of racism and discrimination. The fraternity has not limited itself to the incidents that happen inside the game, with many international teams taking a knee as a supporting gesture towards the Black Lives Matter Campaign.

After the match, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi wrote a letter to the BCB requesting disciplinary action against Sabbir Rahman.”Sabbir started abusing me when I was batting against Rupganj on June 13,” Sunny told media personnel. “I asked him thrice whether he himself understood what he was saying, but he kept repeating it. I got angry, after which the umpires had to separate us. But he kept calling me Kalo. We won the match so I didn’t react too much.

“During today’s match, when we were fielding, Rupganj’s bus had arrived near the BKSP 3 ground. He started teasing me with the same Kalo, Kalo. I didn’t react at first. But shortly afterward, he threw a stone at me. I maintained the protocol by telling the umpires. The play was stopped for a while. I also spoke to the match referee.” Sunny added.

However, Sabbir Rahman has denied the incident and said that Elias was a senior cricketer and he would not do something like that.”We had just arrived and someone from behind directed racial slurs at him. Everyone calls him by that name but I didn’t. He thought I did. There is no question of throwing a stone. Is it easy to throw stones? Why would I do something like that? He is my senior,” Sabbir told a media personnel

Regarding the previous match between the two teams where an altercation had taken place, Sabbir said: “He was batting and I asked ‘why aren’t you playing shots, you have to score runs quickly due to DL method’. That’s all I said, I didn’t insult him.”

Well, for the unversed this was not the first time when Sabbir created any controversy. He had to serve six months when he assaulted a fan in a first-class match in December 2017. The next year, in 2018, the cricketer was handed another ban for six months from international cricket after he abused a fan on social media. While last year, he was accused of slapping a cleaner.

The DPL 2021 edition, meanwhile, has been in the news for the worst of reasons with Shakib Al Hasan’s recent on-field outburst against the umpires.
