Japan’s Momiji Nishiya became one of the youngest individual Olympic Champions in history when she won the inaugural women’s skateboarding gold at the age of 13 years and 330 days on Monday.

With her victory, host Japan had clean swept the skateboarding event by winning gold in both men’s and women’s event. After Yuto Horigome’s victory in Men’s event on Sunday, Japan’s Momiji beçame the first female skateboarder to be crowned Olympic Gold Medal.

Momiji finished ahead of Brazil’s Rayssa Leal and Japan’s Funa Nakayama. Momiji starred in the tricks section to score 15.26 and secured her first Olympic Gold Medal.

Who is Momiji Nishiya?

The 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya is a Japanese Skateboarder. She had previously competed at the 2019 Summer X Games in the women’s street event where she scored 90.00 points and won a silver medal. Earlier this year, she had also participated in the 2021 Street Skateboarding World Championship where she scored 14.18 and won the silver medal.

Moreover, As of June 2021, Momiji Nishiya was ranked fifth in the Olympic World Skateboarding Rankings. Notably, four of the eight women in the final of the Women Skateboarding Event at Tokyo Olympics 2020 were 16 or under and two were 13, jolting the Olympics with the kind of youthful spirit that it wanted.

For the unversed Tokyo Olympics 2020 marks the debut of Skateboarding along with surfing, sport climbing, and karate as part of an attempt to bring Olympics to the younger audience.
