WhatsApp is expected to soon roll out the ‘Disappearing Messages” feature.The messaging app posted about the feature on its FAQ page which suggests that the feature will be available soon.
As the name suggests, the messages will be short-lived on the app and will disappear once read, much like the Instagram Stories, Snapchat stories, etc. Although the time frame can be selected by the users on WhatsApp.
WhatsApp was long -rumored to be working on the disappearing message feature. Several times the traces of the feature was spotted in the beta updates.
WhatsApp also explained how the feature will work. The company said that once the feature is enabled, “new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days”.
“If a user doesn’t open WhatsApp in the seven days, the message will disappear. However, the preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened,” the Facebook-owned company said.
WhatsApp however said that if a disappearing message is forwarded to another chat with disappearing messages off, the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat. Moreover, it said that if the user “creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be included in the backup”.
WhatsApp also suggests that disappearing message should be sent to trusted individuals so that no one takes a screenshot of the message, forward it to someone, or copies it. This will help in maintaining the privacy of users, which is the main essence of the feature.
Coming to the media in disappearing messages, WhatsApp says that ” media you receive in WhatsApp will automatically be downloaded to your photos. If disappearing messages are turned on, the media sent in the chat will disappear but will be saved on the phone if auto-download is on.
This feature is set the be rolled out on Whatsapp for web, Android, iOS, and KaiOS.
