July 2, 2022 (New Delhi): Speaking at an event organized by the association of Indian Americans in San Francisco, the Chief Justice of India, N. V. Ramana, talked about the ongoing social and political scenario in India and its implications. He emphasized the need to follow a holistic approach that includes all the stakeholders in a society. “In the 21st century, we cannot allow petty, narrow, and divisive issues to dictate human and societal relationships. We have to rise above all the divisive issues to remain focused on human development. A non-inclusive approach is an invitation to disaster”, Said the CJI.

IGNORANCE IS NOT ALWAYS BLISS

He also mentioned the ignorance spread due to a lack of information among the common people of India. Which in turn helps the ones who want to reduce the stature of the Indian Judiciary. But he made it clear that the judiciary is only answerable to the constitution of India.
“It is the vigorously promoted ignorance among the general public which is coming to the aid of such forces whose only aim is to run down the only independent organ, i.e., the judiciary. Let me make it clear. We are answerable to the Constitution and the Constitution alone, ” said the CJI.

SOME REGRETS

While speaking at the event, Mr. Ramana reiterated the importance of the roles and responsibilities that the constitution has assigned to each democratic institution. However, he said, he regrets that the improtance of these roles is still not fully realised; “As we celebrate the 75th year of independence and as our Republic turns 72, with some sense of regret, I must add here that we still haven’t learnt to appreciate wholly the roles and responsibilities assigned by the Constitution to each of the institutions”.

ON THE INDIA-AMERICA PARTNERSHIP

Speaking on Indo-American relations, the CJI appreciated the values and ideas of American society in which people of varied backgrounds could come together and work towards the growth of the country. He said, “It is the tolerance and inclusive nature of American society that enables it to attract the best talents from all over the world, which in turn contributes to its growth. Honouring qualified talents from diverse backgrounds is also essential to sustain the confidence of all  sections of society in the system.”

N V Ramana also mentioned the partnership between India and America. The positive approach to bilateral relations has led to a massive bilateral trade of goods worth $113 billion in 2021.
“I’m happy to learn that 50% of the business–to–business startups in the Silicon Valley are founded, funded, or run by Indians” he said.
