Harbhajan Singh Demands Swift Justice in Kolkata Rape-Murder
Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP, Harbhajan Singh, has voiced his deep anguish over the Kolkata rape-murder case, urging West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure swift justice for the victim. The incident, involving the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, has sparked protests across the nation.
Taking to his X account (formerly Twitter), Harbhajan shared a heartfelt letter addressed to Mamata Banerjee, the Governor of West Bengal, C.V. Ananda Bose, and the citizens of India. In the letter, he expressed his deep concern over the delay in justice for the victim, calling the incident a “shocking” and “unacceptable” attack on the dignity and safety of women in society.
“The Kolkata rape-murder case has shaken our collective conscience. I have earnestly appealed to the Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, and the Governor, to act swiftly and decisively,” Harbhajan wrote. “There can be no compromise on the safety and dignity of women. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the full force of the law, and their punishment should serve as a stern example. Only then can we restore faith in our system and ensure that such tragedies never happen again. We must ask ourselves—if not now, then when? The time for action is now.”
In his two-page letter, Harbhajan emphasized the urgent need for systemic change and immediate action by authorities, reflecting on the deeper issues rooted in society that this incident has brought to light. He noted the gravity of the crime occurring within the premises of a medical institution, a place dedicated to healing and saving lives, and expressed his dismay that more than a week has passed without any significant action, prompting the medical community to take to the streets in protest.
“The medical community already works under challenging conditions,” Harbhajan continued. “How can we expect them to fulfill their duties with dedication when their own safety is so gravely compromised?”
Harbhajan’s impassioned plea comes as the nation continues to grapple with the horrifying incident, highlighting the urgent need for justice and reform to ensure the safety and dignity of women in India.
