Netflix published a list of its ten most popular original movies of all time.

The streaming service is notoriously secretive about its viewing figures, but frequently releases selected numbers when specific movies or TV series are doing well.

For example, Netflix announced that 64 million households have watched True Crime docuseries Tiger King, and that the Henry Cavill-starring video game adaptation The Witcher has notched 76 million views.

The most watched original all-time Netflix film was the extraction ,the thriller which featured chris hamsworth was released this April. Netflix says the film received 99 million views in total.

The Sandra Bullock-starring thriller Bird Box and the high-budget crime film Michael Bay’s “ 6 Underground” also makes to the list.

Martin Scorsese’s 210-minute gangster film The Irishman, coming in at number six, is by some distance the most critically acclaimed film to make up to  the list.

Otherwise, for those associating the Netflix Original brand with acclaimed films from high-profile stars, such as Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” or  Coen Brothers’ “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”, the top 10 list may contain a few surprises.

Here is the list in full, along with the total number of viewers:

  1. Extraction – 99 Million
  • Bird Box – 89 Million
  • Spenser Confidential – 85 Million
  • 6 Underground – 83 Million

It is important to remember, though, that the company selects and chooses on which titles it publishes information for , in order to highlight its achievements – and that it has recently updated the way it tracks views.

While the service used to count a view when a user streamed at least 70 per cent of a title, it now registers them when any account has watched at least two minutes of a film or TV show.

The belief in Netflix is that if anyone watches something for two minutes, they made an deliberate decision to keep it running. Autoplay isn’t considered.
