“Elite CBI Team Takes Over Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case”

A specialized team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) descended on Kolkata on Wednesday, bringing along forensic and medical experts to launch a high-stakes investigation into the shocking rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. This dramatic turn of events follows the Calcutta High Court’s decisive move to hand over the case to the CBI, citing a disappointing lack of progress in the local police’s efforts.

The CBI’s involvement comes hot on the heels of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s public expression of frustration with the pace of the police investigation. She had warned that if the case wasn’t cracked by Sunday, it would be passed to the central agency. However, the Calcutta High Court acted swiftly, ordering the transfer to the CBI a full five days before Banerjee’s deadline—a rare move that underscores the seriousness of the situation.

The court’s bench highlighted not only the stagnation in the police’s investigation but also raised concerns about the potential destruction of crucial evidence. In response, the CBI swiftly registered a First Information Report (FIR) mirroring the charges initially filed by the Kolkata police, which include rape and murder. The local authorities have now handed over all relevant case files to the CBI for further scrutiny.

This chilling case has already seen the Kolkata police summoning 37 individuals for questioning after the 31-year-old doctor’s lifeless body was discovered in a seminar hall last Friday. Among the suspects is Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with boxing training, whose injuries reportedly align with DNA evidence recovered from the victim, leading to his arrest.

As the CBI gears up to take control of the investigation, their officials have already visited Tala police station to secure the case diary and other key documents, signaling that they may soon seek custody of the accused. The Kolkata police, in turn, have pledged full cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to justice for the victim’s family while cautioning the public against spreading unverified information that could jeopardize the investigation.

With the CBI now at the helm, this case has captured national attention, setting the stage for a thorough and possibly explosive investigation that could bring long-awaited answers in this tragic and deeply disturbing crime.
