A lot many motorcyclists in India will teary-eyed to find out that Jawa motorcycles will soon make a comeback in the country. Many of us have grown up with one parked under our porch, or have memories of our father or grandfather riding one. Mahindra & Mahindra is now in ownership of Jawa and BSA motorcycles, which means the Yezdi is back! It’s been a sought after motorcycle among aficionados in India for its proven on- and off-road performance. Although it was a fuel guzzler, that was really not a concern to an enthusiast. Mahindra announced last year that it had bought Jawa and that the company would make the motorcycles available in India within two years. Also recently, Anand Mahindra himself announced the launch of the website ‘Yezdis of India’, which seemed like another positive sign. However, the exact launch timeline is so far not known.
In an official statement to PTI, Pawan Goenka, Managing Director – Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra has confirmed that the company will soon move away from the commuter segment to high-end premium bikes in India.
“We are changing strategy as far as the two-wheeler business is concerned. We are moving away from the commuter segment to high-end premium bikes and we are working on bikes based on BSA and Yezdi brands,” he added.
Mahindra & Mahindra is now poised to diversify its product portfolio in India, especially with two-wheelers, which so far only has small displacement commuter motorcycles and the Mojo. The company will now retail premium motorcycles under the Jawa/Yezdi and BSA brands as well.
Czech motorcycle manufacturer Jawa launched an all-new 2017 Jawa 350 model, called the 350 OHC 4-Stroke, in its home country in the month of May. Powered by a 350cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine that makes 26 bhp at 5250 rpm and 32 Nm of peak torque at 4750 rpm paired to a four-speed gearbox, the Jawa 350 OHC is the first model from the manufacturer to feature ABS.
Jawa may make an appearance at the 2018 Auto Expo, hopefully with the 350 OHC. When launched in India, Royal Enfield will have a direct and stiff competition from a brand that may have been missing from the market for long but continues to hold a special place in the Indian motorcyclist’s mind.
