Stop Giving Anti-Biotics To Chicken, Human At Risk: Law Panel

The chicken and eggs you eat could be contaminated with antibiotics, leading to drug resistance in your body, the Law Commission has warned citing studies. The commission has now recommended that antibiotics, including coccidiostats, “shall not be administered” to broiler chickens and egg laying hens except under the supervision of a veterinarian. In its report on poultry birds, the law panel has pointed out that it is also important that the feed used must be nutrient-rich and devoid of antibiotics as it affects the consumer food quality standard. But, “there are no statutory regulations, at present to prescribe the standard, quality and quantity of food for poultry in India which leads to the rampant use of antibiotics in the poultry feed,” the report ‘Transportation and house- keeping of egg-laying hens and broiler chickens’ observed.

It explained that climatic conditions such as temperature and humidity play an important role in attaining maximum production. Higher temperatures would lead to low productivity. “Therefore, the birds are usually kept at constant temperatures in poultry farms in India. The downside to this is that the birds would be more susceptible to diseases even with small changes in climatic conditions, affecting the chances of their survival. Consequently, they are fed antibiotics to boost immunity,” it said. In response to the notice inviting suggestions on the issue, the panel had received several responses, including the one from the Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai.

The Centre said many Indians suffer from antibiotic resistance as it is proven that non-therapeutic antibiotics given to poultry cause such resistance. Such antibiotics are given to poultry because their living conditions are cramped and unhygienic. “With more open, cleaner and ventilated living space the animals are less likely to need these constant antibiotics making their eggs and meat safer for human consumption,” the Centre told the law panel. The law panel recalled that the central government had in the past issued instructions against the use of antibiotics. In June 2014 the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has also issued an advisory to departments of animal husbandry of all the states saying, regular feeding of antibiotics has serious consequences on the human being since residues of antibiotics may accumulate in meat, milk and eggs.

Besides the report, the law panel has also drafted separate prevention of cruelty to animals rules for egg-laying hens and broiler chickens. As per the draft, “antibiotics, including coccidiostats, shall not be administered except under the supervision of a veterinarian”. If the antibiotics have to be administered for therapeutic purposes (disease treatment), it should be done only under the supervision of a veterinarian. A push by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi to have a relook at the various laws governing poultry birds had recently prompted the Law Ministry to ask the commission to submit a report based on “existing laws and international trends relating to housekeeping and transportation of poultry birds.”

A Less Toxic Version Of Tobacco A Reality?

A new genetic road map of tobacco has been used to successfully identify and clone two mutated genes associated with how efficiently the plants used nitrogen – a discovery that could one day help reduce the need for nitrogen-based fertilisers in growing crops.

These same genes could also play a role in helping to reduce the levels of some carcinogenic compounds in cigarette smoke.

The overuse of nitrogen-based fertilisers on crops can lead to an excess of nitrate in the environment, which can, in turn, lead to water acidification and eutrophication, in addition to nutrients leaching from the soil. This can cause reductions in biodiversity and crop productivity, as well as having negative impacts on both animal and human health.

In the case of tobacco, inefficient metabolism of nitrogen by the plant can lead to high concentrations of some nitrogen-based compounds in the leaf, the presence of which lead to the formation of certain tobacco-specific toxicants in smoke.

Scientists at British American Tobacco, North Carolina State University (Raleigh, North Carolina, USA) and the Boyce Thompson Institute (Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA) worked together to develop a new genetic roadmap of the tobacco genome (Nicotiana tabacum). This road map lays out the position of (or “anchors”) 64% of the tobacco genome, compared to just 20% in previous attempts.

The tobacco genome is about 50% larger than a human genome (at about 4Gb). It is also significantly more complicated than the human genome because it is allopolyploid, that is, it arises from the hybridization of different ancestral species (in this case N. sylvestris and N. tomentosiformis) — each tobacco cell contains sets of chromosomes originating from both of these species.

This makes assembly of the genome sequence technically very difficult because the combined genomes are very similar in sequence — in effect a bit like trying to put together two jumbled jigsaw puzzles containing very similar, but non-identical, pictures. The sequence also contains a lot of repetition, making assembling some areas like trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle of blue sky.

“Generating this dramatically improved assembly for tobacco is a substantial step forward,” said Chris Proctor, Chief Scientific Officer at British American Tobacco. ‘It will open up several avenues of research that will help scientists gain a greater understanding of the evolution of the tobacco plant to the identification of genes responsible for several traits, whether they be related to improving sustainability of agriculture, reducing the levels of toxicants in tobacco products, or improving the production of pharmaceuticals and biofuels.’

The new assembly has already been used to successfully identify two mutated genes that explain why Burley tobacco is not very effective at utilising nitrogen compared with other types of tobacco. “Different cultivars of Burley tobacco all share these two gene mutations, giving us a handle on why they differ from other tobaccos,” explained Allen Griffiths, Head of Plant Biotechnology, British American Tobacco. “We believe this represents the first successful map-based gene discovery for N. tab cum, and demonstrates the value of a high-quality genome assembly for future research.”

Nitrogen is essential for plant growth, and many farmers add nitrogen-based fertilisers to crops to achieve good yields. However, excess nitrogen can have adverse effects on the environment. The discovery of these genes could, therefore, help improve the nitrogen use efficiency of some types of tobacco, as well as other commercially important crops — ultimately reducing the need for chemical fertilisers. Modifying the mutant genes could potentially also lead to the development of novel tobacco cultivars that contain lower levels of TSNAs.

How To Have Sex Last Longer In Bed? We Have The Answers!

There are many reasons why you might not last as long in bed as you would like. But the good news is that there are a variety of behavioural changes, health tips, and in certain cases, even prescription treatments that can help you last longer in bed.

It’s common to equate sexual prowess with sexual stamina — although, amazing-and-short sex is almost always preferable to awful-but-long banging. Most people might not want to admit that they couldn’t make it past the five minute mark, but research shows almost half of men orgasm in two minutes or less. A 2017 survey by British sex toy retailer Lovehoney found that the average sex session is a manageable 10 minutes (19 if you include foreplay). The good news is that according to research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, 10 minutes is right in line with how long people want sex to last. According to the study, seven to 13 minutes is a “desirable” length of time to be going at it in the bedroom. But if your sex life feels like a hundred meter dash and you need a 400 meter relay to get off, here are some things you can do to improve your mileage.

The graphic below is designed by the medical team at LloydsPharmacy’s Online Doctor to provide some tips and tricks to help you last longer.

No Kidding… Kids At Gym

In order to keep fit, it is always recommended that exercises are the best way to accomplish this goal. It is advised that all adults should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week.

When most adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in the gym, running on a treadmill, or lifting weights.

But for kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids exercise when they have gym class at school, during recess, at dance class or soccer practice, while riding bikes, or when playing tag.

But kids of this generation are also working out in the gym, running on a treadmill, or lifting weights. Is it really good?

Improving strength doesn’t have to mean lifting weights. Instead, kids can do push-ups, stomach crunches, pull-ups, and other exercises to help tone and strengthen muscles. They also improve their strength when they climb, do a handstand, or wrestle.

‘Young children should absolutely not be doing weight training or resistance work,

Video Courtsey: Geotic Productions

There is always a danger of children over-doing things. Lots of budding footballers who train hard from an early age suffer later with their legs. Too much exercise can make children ill and their immune systems suffer.’

This may have some advantages as well:

One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or other screens.

· Put limits on the time spent using media, which includes TV, social media, and video games. Media should not take the place of getting enough sleep and being active.

· Limit screen time to 1 hour a day or less for children 2 to 5 years old.

· Discourage any screen time, except video-chatting, for kids younger than 18 months.

· Choose high-quality programming and watch it with your kids to help them understand what they’re seeing.

· Keep TVs, computers, and video games out of children’s bedrooms and turn off screens during mealtimes.

But the disadvantages are more of a reason for concern as they are life threatening.

Do not begin any new exercise program without consulting your doctor first, especially if you have any health conditions or have been suffering from some serious health problem.
