Every year on Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesh Utsav and Ganesh Visarjan, people all across India join in the merriment and welcome home Lord Ganesha. While they host the deity for a different number of days, depending on their choice, the revelry and emotions while bidding him adieu remain constant for all.
But while the days of dance and fun are something every Mumbaikar looks forward to, it’s the post-Visarjan days that they dread. And rightly so. The beaches all across the city become victims to the rituals and practices and every year, the cause is brought to the fore by some celebrities and organisations.
This isn’t the first time that a celebrity has joined hands with other people to make sure the cleanliness is maintained. In fact, Shahid’s wife, Mira, too, has been vocal about the cause on her Instagram account. Just a few months back, she had taken to social media and raised concerns over the plastic remains that continue to dwell at the beach. She had then urged individuals and organisations to lend support for the cause.
In the past, many celebrities including Randeep Hooda, Saiyami Kher, Anusha Dandekar and Pooja Bhatt among others have taken the initiative to clean popular tourist spots including Juhu and Versova beach.

Ganesh Chaturthi one festival that is widely celebrated around the country. Although it is known for immersing lord Ganesha’s idol in a water body, the practice has become a threat to the environment. Recently, singer Vishal Dadlani tweeted about the environmental hazards caused by doing visarjanon a water body.
He wrote, “India, don’t immerse Ganpati in the ocean or natural water-bodies. Can’t bear to see half-dissolved idols all over again. Treat Ganesha & Nature with the respect they deserve. Use natural, soluble idols & immerse at home/in tanks built for this. Pl. don’t let this happen again.”
Many devotees do live near a water body and so are unable to do visarjan. Although one might find it disappointing, it is actually a way of choosing a healthier environmental decision. Several Ganesha idols which are made of materials like plaster of Paris are immersed in large water bodies that give off harmful chemicals which threated aqua life and waste clean water.
Though people should take a pledge of going eco-friendly this year if you do immerse idols in a water body, devotees who do not stay near can do this…
While the festival is about chanting Ganpati Bappa Morya and 10 long days of celebrations, several people have to celebrate the festival using clay idols and immersing it in buckets of water at home.

Bappa has finally arrived to all the homes today. Not only at homes, the modern day bappa is now ruling the virtual world too! Offering prayers at a temple is one of the most common things we do but have you ever thought of texting lord Ganesh on your phones? Chintaman Ganesha temple in Juni, Indore, offers a novel service to devotees who cannot make it to the temple personally. Devotees who are based at far off places and wish to pray to Lord Ganesha call up the priests at the temple on their mobile phone. The priests in turn put the mobile handset close to the God’s ears even as the devotee offers prayers over the phone. On Ganesh Chaturthi day, as thousands of local devotees throng the temple, there are hundreds more based abroad who wish to offer prayers, too, at the temple to seek blessings. This is how the tradition seems to have started.
Isn’t it a really cool thing for the modern era? Even the tech giant twitter has paid a special tribute and joined the bappa fever. Twitter has launched a special Lord Ganesha Twitter emoji that Indians can Tweet to welcome the much-loved god home on Monday, 5th September. When people Tweet using #GaneshChaturthi, #HappyGaneshChaturthi, #Ganeshotsav, #गणेशचतुर्थी, #गणेशोत्सव, a Lord Ganesha emoji will be activated next to the hashtag. The emoji has gone live since September 4 and will be active until the last day of celebrations. This little effort by twitter is big enough to make us smile and enjoy the grand welcome of Bappa in an even better way.
