Dancing can be a great way to stay active and it’s suitable for all ages. From Zumba to ballet dance classes aren’t just for kids. So dust off your ballet shoes, wiggle into that belly-dancing top and grab your partner for the Charlston; we’ve got 5 dance styles to boost your fitness!
Gone are the days when ballet was all about little girls with perfect buns, performing plies. Yes, of course, it’s still about that, to some extent, but in recent years ballet has become the new cool. Fusion classes where fitness meets ballet, such as barre classes, have become all the rage. As anyone who has ever attended a ballet class knows, dancers use muscles you didn’t even know you had, and it’s not unusual to be sore for several days after a class.
Ballet can improve your posture, help you stretch those muscles, and tone your legs, thighs and bum. We can’t promise you’ll land the starring role in Swan Lake – to be a professional ballet dancer takes incredible discipline and commitment – but we can promise you’ll boost your fitness, flexibility and mood with regular classes. It’s best to attend a class rather than trying this at home, as all those jumps and spins can be hard on your muscles; it’s easy to pick up bad habits.
#2. Swing dance
Swing dance is a craze sweeping the nation. We touched on it briefly in our article about alternatives to the Gym. It’s the workout-that-doesn’t-feel-like-a-workout, so if you’re a self-confessed couch potato or new to fitness, this is a great place to start. Swing dance classes are a great chance to be social too – you’ll meet new people and no partners are required, so you can attend alone or with friends.
#3. Belly dancing
Banish those images of middle-aged women in belly tops. Belly dancing is fun, flirtatious and for all ages, and you can wear what you like! Belly dancing provides you with the perfect ab workout, toning and sculpting almost every single muscle in your core. It’s a great way to target your deep transverse abdominals and get a toned stomach for bikini figure.
Zumba has taken off in recent years, hailed as ‘the most awesome workout ever.” It’s as much about dance as it is about fitness; low-intensity moves are combined with high-intensity exercises and Latin rhythms. It can boost your energy, improve balance and flexibility, help you lose weight and condition your muscles.
#5. Salsa dancing
Salsa is great for all ages and you’ll find you’re burning up to 600 calories an hour, depending on how intense your session is! Salsa also helps to strengthen your muscles and bones, preventing arthritis. It can improve flexibility and coordination, and because you’re dancing in a group setting, it’s ideal if you’re a little shy, as it will really help to boost your self-esteem and confidence.
Earlier this month police arrested and released a Saudi singer for using the ‘dab’ move in an onstage dance. Abdallah al-Shahani appeared on a viral video performing the dance at a music festival in the city of Taif in southwestern Saudi Arabia.
The dance had been banned in the Kingdom by the National Committee for Drug Control, on the grounds that it advocated or encouraged drug abuse, according to Saudi media.
Saudis are among the most active users of social media in the Arab world, using the Internet as an outlet for debate and interaction in their deeply conservative society.

Not long ago, actress Kriti Sanon shared a video of herself dancing to the tunes of one of ‘Mubarakan’ songs, on her social media account. We all took it to be a nice gesture towards her industry friends. But then, you can never stop everyone from being offended.
Kriti’s video too had a few takers, including KRK (not that we really care). But the one to lash Kriti publicly is actress Bhairavi Goswami. For those scratching your heads and trying to remember her, she was in ‘Hate Story’.
Not a great way to express your dislike for someone on social media, we believe!
Earlier, Kriti’s video got KRK at his meanest best and he wrote, “Ye Dekho Kiriti Bechari, Raabta Ke flop Hone Ke Baad, mentally disturb Ho Gayee hai! (Look, Kriti has gone mentally disturbed after the failure of ‘Raabta’)”.
Well, not at all graceful we would say. It was just a cute gesture on Kriti’s part, for team ‘Mubarakan’. How few people find negativity in almost everything, we fail to understand.
What do you do, when someone in front of you is doing a Nagin dance? You joined him, right! Well, don’t.
If you are planning to do a Nagin dance at your wedding day, please be cautious as it can result in the end of your marriage. Anubhav Mishra (NAGIN dance enthusiast) on Tuesday attempted a snake dance at his own wedding-Too Happy Too Soon- and even made hissing sounds, seeing her soon-to-be husband’s embarrassing dance, the bride to be Priyanka Tripathi called off the wedding just before when rituals were about to start.
As reported by TimesOfIndia, witnesses told the reporters that the groom was drunk when he reached for the ceremony. The groom’s family tried to convince the bride but she didn’t listen to them and in the end, the wedding rituals did not get completed.
Both Anubhav Mishra and Priyanka Tripathi live in Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. The two had known each other prior to the wedding and even exchanged gifts before the marriage.
But then, Anubhav was drawn to a ‘nagin song’ which was being played at the wedding and it seems he could not hold himself back. While he began to dance to the tunes, his friends showered currency notes on him. All this as Priyanka and her shocked family waited in silence.
It was then that Priyanka felt that Anubhav was not the right match for him and she called off the wedding despite persuasion and threats by the groom’s family and friends
Times Of India also reported that the girl got married the very next day to a more ‘sober’ male.

Ed Sheeran’s hit single title ‘Shape of you” had taken the world by storm. Since its release in late January, the official video has garnered over 48 crore views and still counting. The foot thumping with twirling beats. It has been the number one on the chartbusters for 10 weeks, for now, only short of 6 to break Bryan Adams record of ‘Everything I Do’.
We are all fascinated by the Bollywood dance, the hip-hop, and salsa but for the very first time, we have a regional dance performing on the song. Ladies were seen performing in the Odissi style, which is the regional dance form of the people of Odisha.
The video, which was shot in a beautiful city of Bhubaneshwar, has garnered a lot of appreciation from all over the nation. The voice of the ‘ghunghroos’ and other ‘desi’ touch perfectly sync with the beats of the song. Just have a look over here:
