‘The Wall’ turns 44, Happy Birthday Rahul Dravid!

Batting legend Rahul Dravid, popularly known as ‘The Wall’ of Indian cricket, is celebrating his 44th birthday today. Dravid, known for his style, timings and technique on the field, is considered as one of the most respected cricketers of his generation. Born in a Marathi family and brought up in Bangalore, he started playing cricket at the age of 12 and later represented Karnataka at the under-15, under-17 and under-19 levels.

Dravid is the fourth-highest run scorer in Test cricket, after Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis, and is only the second Indian cricketer, after Tendulkar to score 10,000 runs both in Tests and in ODIs.
Earlier In 2004, after completing his century against Bangladesh in Chittagong, he became the first and the only player till date to score a century in all the ten Test-playing countries.

Interestingly, Dravid holds a unique record of never getting out on a Golden duck in the 286 Test innings which he has played. After playing 164 Test matches, 344 ODI cricket and 1 T20, Dravid bids adieu to International cricket in 2012. He is currently coaching the India’s Under-19 team. On this special day, let’s look at some his memorable performances:

Dravid scored his first Test century in January 1997 against South Africa. In a man-of-the-match performance, he scored 148 in a nine-hour innings
Scoring 180 in a fifth-wicket partnership of 376 with VVS Laxman, in the Second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2001, Dravid helped lead India to victory by 171 runs despite being asked to follow-on by the Australians.

Dravid’s highest Test score of 270, achieved in April 2004 in Rawalpindi, helped India to an innings victory over Pakistan.
