After being in a spectacular form while playing for Barcelona, Neymar has now become the most expensive player in the history of the game following his rich transfer to Paris Saint-Germain for 222 million Euros ($ 262 million). The transfer marks as the highest paid transfer, being more than double of the previous record set a year ago when Manchester United paid 105 million Euros for Paul Pogba. The owners of Paris Saint-Germain went for the rich bet six years after taking over the underachieving French club and are keeping their fingers crossed for Champions League glory with Neymar.
Interestingly, the 25-year-old soccer player signed the five year contract months after playing a decisive role for Barcelona as the team’s historical comeback in the Champions league. After a 4-0 loss in the first leg match, Barcelona was trailing 5-3 before Neymar stunned with two goals in the final minutes, defeating PSG with Sergio Roberto’s winner in the extra time.
As reported by the Associated Press, in comments released by PSG, Neymar was quoted saying, “Paris Saint-Germain’s ambition attracted me to the club, along with the passion and the energy this brings. I played four seasons in Europe and I feel ready to take the challenge. From today, I will do everything I can to help my new teammates, to open up new horizons for my club and to bring happiness to its millions of supporters around the world.”
And while Barcelona won the Champions League, Club World Cup, two Spanish league titles and Copa Del Rey three times, Neymar had scored 105 goals in his four seasons with the club. And by bagging the PSG contract Neymar will finally come out of the shadow of Messi, who had been the world player of the year for five times and become the biggest player in the French league playing for a team without a track record of mentionable success.
