- India chased down 49 runs with 9 wickets to spare
- Men in Blue lead the series 1-0
- 2 matches remain in the series
India for the umpteenth time trashed Australia this season as they went on to comfortably win by 9 wickets in the first T20 for the three match series. Chasing a reduced target of 49 runs from 6 overs after Australia had earlier made 118/8, it was a walk in the park for the men in blue in Ranchi as they went on to take a 1-0 lead. Australia were once again left scratching their heads as a clearly superior Indian side walked all over them.
Winning the toss and opting to field first, India set the tone for the Australian innings in the first over itself after Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed David Warner in the first over. Kuldeep Yadav also bowled with brilliance and the Aussies were never able to read him as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Despite Finch’s heroics, the side from down under were not able to get past the wily Yadav who ended up bowling a match-changing spell of 2-16 off his 4 overs.
With rain bringing a halt in proceedings, the play finally resumed with the match being reduced to 6 overs and India being handed a revised target of 49 runs off 6 overs. Captain Virat Kohli (22) and Rohit Sharma (15) took India to victory by 9 wickets by the D/L method with Yadav taking home the man of the match award.
With this win, India’s unbeaten record against Australia at home in T20s remained intact. This is also their seventh consecutive win on the trot against Australia in the format. It will be a real battle for Australia to one up the Indians and keep their hopes alive in the second match of the series in Guwahati.
