The ‘geek comic-book’ era is no way slowing down, in fact movies like Batman V Superman, Captain America: Civil War, Deadpool and X-Men Apocalypse raking millions from box-office while bringing nerd-tears on the faces of millions of geeks, myself included. With the extremely anticipated Suicide Squad film coming out in just under a month, many casual moviegoers have a lot of ground to cover if they hope to understand what is going on in the movie. Apart from The Joker, however, most people don’t really know who any of these characters are or what they are meant to do, and there are even those who love comic books, but don’t know some of the more interesting aspects of the squad. Even though most people don’t know a lot about the Suicide Squad, they are actually one of DC’s longest running groups and have had an integral part to play in their universe. So, in anticipation for the star-studded film, let’s take a look at the Suicide Squad and raise excitement levels to an even higher degree! Here are 5 things you should know about Suicide Squad.
1. The Suicide Squad
First appearing in DC’s comic universe in 1959’s The Brave and the Bold series of Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru, the Suicide Squad was introduced as an antihero team made up of DC’s best loved villains. A covert, secretive group of captured criminals, the squad is formed by the US government in order to carry out operations they can’t be seen to have a hand in, denying the group’s operations as random super villain attacks in return for pardoning their crimes.
2. The Suicide Squad Characters
The live-action iteration of the team will feature Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), as well as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), who many are expecting to be the breakout character since gaining popularity ever since she first appeared in Batman: the Animated Series, in 1992. Headlining the team is mainstay Deadshot, played by Will Smith, who in the film is caught between his mercenary lifestyle and love for his daughter; a bit different from his comic self, who wants to die spectacularly. Oh, and there’s one more member.
3. Joker is returning to Big screen.
Played this time by Jared Leto, the Joker has never been a Suicide Squad member in the comics. He was likely added to the film to give it a “big name” character, as well as to play off his sidekick, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. To get the most out of the role—and perhaps to differentiate himself from Heath Ledger’s acclaimed version—Jared Leto never broke character on set, including sending creepy gifts to castmates, including giving Robbie a live rat. He was so in-character that Will Smith claimed he never actually “met” Jared Leto during filming
4. It has Batman, yes!
While taking characters from across the DC Universe, the majority of this team is primarily associated with Batman, who will appear in this film, once again portrayed by Ben Affleck. While originally believed to be just a cameo explaining how Joker and/or Harley was arrested, Affleck has confirmed that the Dark Knight is actually rather important; he’s the one who captured most of the Suicide Squad in the first place and has clearly had a psychological effect on them, especially, of course, Jared Leto’s Joker.
5. The trailers are real deal
This biggest USP of Suicide Squad marketing department is it’s trailers, all trailers are beautifully edited and hyped up the movie even more, not to mention the title tracks like ‘Heathens’ and ‘Sucker for pain’ is a real deal.
