Nitish puts his weight behind BJP’s nominee Kovind, dashes opposition hope to contest

In an apparent blow to the Opposition unity, Nitish Kumar announced his party’s support to the NDA’s nominees for the post of President in the run-up to the elections to be held on 17th July. It was widely speculated in the political circles that Nitish might ultimately endorse Ram Nath Kovind for the highest post of the country after BJP announced Kovind’s name for same.

The announcement just comes a day before the Congress-led opposition was to name its candidate for the Presidential election and is seen as a big setback for the entire opposition as a whole.

What even more disturbing for the opposition is that Nitish Kumar and all his party member and also senior party leader Sharad Yadav in Patna told reporters that they would not support Congress-led opposition if it fields a contestant against Ram Nath Kovind.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar again reiterated that BJP’s official pick Ram Nath Kovind ‘was a good man’ and he would support him. It has been reported that Bihar CM has told his decision to Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi. The Congress is in alliance with the JD(U) and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar.

After Nitish Kumar’s blow Sonia Gandhi has now scheduled to meet Opposition party leaders in New Delhi to decide whether the UPA will contest the July 17th Presidential election or unanimously support BJP’s pick Ram Nath Kovind.

HOW CONGRESS STUMPED BY BJP’S RAM NATH KOVIND.

Though Left Party is still keen to put a candidate for upcoming President Election the case is not the same for Congress now because for a fact that NDA has put a Dalit face for the Election.

If Congress will indeed contest an election the party will probably go in for a Dalit candidate to match the NDA on this issue. The names that are doing rounds now are those of former Speaker Meira Kumar, B R Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar and former Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

After this development, it is now almost certain that if there is an election, Ram Nath Kovind will likely to win the election,
